Visa and Samsung are going to launch a mobile payments program during the Olympics Games that will be held next year.
What is more, the companies are planning to develop special handsets for the Olympics that will allow users to make a payment in front of a reader.
In fact, with the help of the program momentum can be built behind near field communication that takes advantage of a number of wireless technology to transmit data over short distances.
Other companies that are making attempts to take advantage of NFC has come across challenges. No doubts that Visa and Samsung can also face some hurdles, i.e. in order to use the payment technology of companies, it will be necessary for people to purchase a special handset that is enabled with Visa SIM card. Moreover, one should find a store that has a reader device which is capable to accept payments from the handsets.
According to Visa and Samsung, they are going to enable athletes with the handsets, the companies are sponsoring at the games. The handsets will also be available through operators as well as other distributors. As the handsets will be available in the U.K. market, it is still hoped they will be offered in Europe and other regions of the world.
Nokia was once enthusiastic about NFC. The handset maker formed a joint venture company with Giesecke & Devrient to work on services around the technology. But later Nokia sold its share.
A lot of tests of NFC payment systems were made, but only few resulted in commercial services. Interest in NFC has been renewed since Google created support for the technology into Android.
It was announced by Google on Thursday that it has become part of the NFC Forum, which is known to be an association that backs NFC.
