Okay ladies and gentlemen, nerds and geeks, gamers and well… non-gamers, just when we were thinking that this holiday season would be the showdown between Apple iPad and Microsoft Kinect, something unexpected happened. Sony made an announcement that pretty much bellowed out high sales volume for the Sony Move controller and Move based games. Did you know that the PlayStation 3 Motion controller has hit 4.3 Million sales since its launch phase in September?
Sony’s announcements were soon followed by some of the flashy flags from Microsoft’s side. The latter company said that it had sold 2.5 Million Kinect Units in just 25 days of its launch period. Both devices are equally popular, IF seen from their own benefits and cons perspective. So what do you think, which one of these two devices will take away the hottest holiday season gadget title?
Before jumping to any conclusions, let’s take a look at some other stuff:
• About the Numbers:
Sony did say that it sold 4.3 million Move controllers and games. But the truth is that those games and controllers were “sold” to retailers. The actual number of those units that the retailers have sold so far, MAY be 1 million. No one knows for sure. Also, there might be a possibility that some stores haven’t even sold a million units. Maybe all of their stock is still intact.
Meanwhile, Microsoft is also doing the same thing. They sold the units to retailers, not exactly real life buyers. So it may take a while for them (retailers) to clear their counters of all Kinects.
My final opinion, for now, stands with Playstation Move. The reason is obviously more flexibility and higher degree of sensitivity. But then again, we cannot negate Kinect’s appeal to the families. It’d be interesting to see only one of these devices as the winner.
Actually Microsoft report estimated “retail sales” of 2,5 kinect devices in their presspass anouncement
So not sales to retailers but actual sales to customers.
That makes it evident that Microsoft is ahead in sales and has passed Sony’s headstart already.
You only need to remember that one kinect is enough for entire family where you need to buy 2-3 Move if you own Playstation. Therefore the clear winner is Microsoft Kinect.
I think you will find tht Microsoft are NOT “Doing the same thing at all and KInect numbers are indeed actual sales.

Sony confirms “shipping”, not selling, 4.1 million Move units

“Sony did indeed reveal those 4.1 million units were Moves that had been sent to stores”
The announcement comes hot on the heels of Microsoft touting its 2.5 million Kinect sales (actual sales).

As for your “FInal opionion” you are joking right ?..
Sony Move is clearly the best technology and clearly gives the player more abilities and options (buttons). The Kinect, all though much better than the old eyetoy, is still an eye toy type interface with no buttons being used. You can only do so much without buttons and kinect will never be able to track as well as the Sony Move ever.
4.1 Million Moves shipped but yet it is sold out in many places.. it has been sold out on Amazon for weeks. How many more would of sold if it was not sold out.. They say there will be move shortages until probably Jan/Feb of 2011. I would hazard a guess that most of those 4.1 have been sold and xbox fanboys are blowing hot air trying to explain away the 4.1 vs 2.5 for their camera.
Face it.. Sony Move is selling very well and would sell more if there wasn’t shortages.
It seems to be that Michael is a PS3 owner and is clearly biased.
Look online, and it’s very easy to find the PS Move online and in stores at retail price or even lower. As of December 3, the same cannot be said about the Kinect, which is sold out in retail stores and online. I went to or called Walmart, Target, Gamestop, Best Buy, and Toys R Us, and even called several locations of each, and all have said that they are sold out with customers constantly asking about the Kinect. I happened to get lucky using a tracker with a shipment coming in a minute before, and ordered from Amazon.
The Wii is started the motion control games, and the PS Move is basically the Wii with the same technology but advanced graphics. The Kinect is just a whole different technological wonder and is what full motion control gaming should be…no controllers to buy or hold. Don’t believe me, look up the reviews on various websites from consumers and you will see that many were skeptical but impressed with the technology upon trying it out.
Michael, I agree! Sony is by far a more advanced technology system that Microsoft has just never been able to reach. It’s the battle between the Japanese mind and the American, it’s no surprise that the Japanese are far more advanced as far as technology is concerned. I am very PRO American, but when it comes down to my gaming console PS3 is by far the best..I use it for Blu ray, Netflix, and The Move (Which is by far better than Kinect). Try both, you’ll eventually come to the dark side = )
How does the Sony Move do at tracking two points at a time? 3? 5? 8?
In many ways it does not really matter who sells more units they are both doing fairly well and seem to be a hit. The kinect has holiday appeal because the games available are the family kind, so thoughts of everyone at home playing during the season is great. But I do wonder what the longevity of the kinect will be? For the time being the kinds of games for the system is limited. It has a lot of potential, but will developers really make games for hardcore type players? Will it really make use of the system or will controllers be the only way to play those? ( I have read else where they are not really looking to go in this direction).
As for the Move, it has the appeal of the wii, but with HD and more precision. So party type games that made the wii so popular will be there but they also have some more mature and intense type games listed. How it plays with games like Killzone3 and SOCOM4 will be know in a few months. If it works well with those games, I think the Move will get another boost in sales, and it may become standard for game play. It really depends on the games. The tech for both are pretty good, but pointless with out well designed games.
